The Psychology of Myths and Fairytales I
The Feminine Psyche in a Patriarchal World
Myths and fairytales are to collective culture what dreams are to the individual. In both cases, the psyche is attempting to communicate its needs and imperatives to the conscious realm, albeit in a symbolic imaginal language that requires skillful analysis and interpretation in order to be understood and assimilated. Undertaking such an analysis brings awareness about the reality of the psyche and its singular role in generating emotions, creativity, and our hidden but highly active complexes.
Course Details
In a series of six-week courses, I will elucidate the psychological significance of myths and fairytales from varying world cultures. Students will learn how to recognize these rich images as symbolic representations of their own individual and cultural experiences on emotional and psychological levels. Each course will focus on a specific psychological dimension and will look deeply at the mythic stories and fairytales dealing with that specific issue.
This inaugural course of the series examines the vicissitudes of feminine consciousness experienced within a sociocultural framework that privileges traditionally masculine values. We use a Jungian lens for our investigations into these concerns.
